The coronavirus pandemic is impacting the way companies around the world conduct business – especially the way we communicate. Businesspeople in all industries are adjusting to a changing world in which the most basic human interactions are no longer taken for granted. Smiles are now hidden by face coverings and shaking hands is often out of the question.
But just because we are now meeting more often than not remotely, aided by software such as Zoom, Google Hangouts or Microsoft Teams, doesn’t mean we can’t look professional and be properly branded in the process. Here are a few tips to keep your next online meeting professional.
Look the Part. It is important for every company to keep a sense of team, even when they are miles apart. Branded polos, matching hats, or company T-shirts can create a sense of professionalism and unity on company calls, even when you can’t be together in person. It also helps you avoid stressing over what to wear – or what others will be wearing. Whether you’re having a team meeting or making a crucial sales pitch, being properly branded can make a difference. It also helps you take advantage of a more relaxed business dress code.
Check your internet connection. Nothing is more frustrating than having a business meeting with a loading screen. Before your next call, be sure to find the best internet connection possible. Choose a network that is secure and reliable to avoid any frustration or difficulty in communicating with your team or clients. A best practice is to avoid public networks and avoid streaming with too many devices at the same time.
Be mindful of your background. While sitting in your house with laundry in the background might be fine for a team meeting, it might not leave the best impression with your clients or business prospects. Instead, try branding your background to fit your company. Whether it’s a company banner, awards or a branded specialty item, be sure that every moment of the call is showing the best side of you and your company brand.
Stay in a quiet room. Life happens sometimes – we’re all human. Barking dogs, yelling kids or lawn mowers at work on your neighbor’s grass, sometimes noise in your video meeting is inevitable. But, try your best to choose a room in which the only thing the person on the other end of your call will hear is the impressive information you are presenting them.
Choose flattering lighting. While it’s not always possible to choose the lighting for your next video call, if you have a choice, try to choose natural lighting with the most flattering view. Harsh lighting such as fluorescents or a dark room will make it more difficult for the other participants to see your true self. You can also be creative to make sure your branded items are clearly visible and making a strong visual impact.
